Doug Stone (born Douglas Jackson Brooks on June 19, 1956) is an American country music singer. He debuted in 1990 with the single "I'd Be Better Off (In a Pine Box)", the first release from his 1990 self-titled debut album for Epic Records. Both this album and its successor, 1991's I Thought It Was You, earned a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Make Up in Love is the eighth studio album by American country music artist Doug Stone. Released in 1999 as his only album for Atlantic Records, it features the singles "Make up in Love, a cover of . Greaves' "Take a Letter, Maria", and Surprise. The title track was the only one of these to chart in the Top 40 on the Billboard country charts. The track "The Difference Between a Woman and a Man" was later recorded by Josh Turner on his 2003 debut album Long Black Train. Make Up in Love" is a mid-tempo about two teenage lovers: a rebellious male named Danny Joe and a female named Bobbie. Danny Joe proposes to her and says that he can "make up in love" for whatever he does not have in material possessions. Susan Campbell of the Hartford Courant called it "a sweet ballad that Stone's very good at".
