Ma mère l’oye; Ma mère l'oye; Ma mère l'Oye; אמא אווזה; Lúdanyó meséi; マ・メール・ロワ; Moja matka gęś; Moja matka hus; 鵝媽媽. Name Aliases. After the tale Ma Mère l'Oye from Charles Perrault's 1697 volume Histoires ou contes du temps passé (composition history). Orchestrated by Ravel in 1911.
In the second suite from the ballet Daphnis et Chloé, for example, his "Lever de jour" and "Pantomime" are all sensuous colors and swelling sonorities, while his "Danse générale" is all driving rhythms and sharp-edged attacks. These works are all short, though - only La Valse lasts longer than 10 minutes - and the listener gets little sense of what Nézet-Séguin would do with larger works.
The piece was originally written as a five-movement piano duet in 1910. In 1911, Ravel orchestrated the work. Ravel originally wrote Ma mère l'Oye as a piano duet for the Godebski children, Mimi and Jean, ages 6 and 7. Ravel dedicated this work for four hands to the children (just as he had dedicated an earlier work, Sonatine, to their parents).
In Ma Mere L'Oye, we are being so intimate, while Daphnis and Chloe is also one of his most uplifting and triumphant (works). There's a lot of contrast. In the 2008/2009 season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin succeeded Valery Gergiev as Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and also became Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Digital Booklet: Ravel: La Valse, Mother Goose, Daphnis et Chloé Suite No 2 etc. Album Only. yes these are warhorse and I would have liked to also have Daphnis and Chloe part 1, but what is here is wonderful. with his extreme attention to detail in complex music, I would love to hear this orchestra and Nezet-Seguin take of Arnold Bax Symphony Three or his Tone Poems. I think he could really do these less well-known but similarly multi-tempo multidimensional music justice.
Ravel’s tribute to the more dissolute side of the waltz is on show in Valses Nobles et Sentimentales and La Valse. We easily forget that when the waltz was new, it was regarded as a decadent development. In La Valse, Ravel has made sure we don’t forget it. The work almost deconstructs the waltz. For me the finest piece on the disc is in the Mother Goose Suite. A ballet score touching on the remembrances of childhood
