Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Black Music for White People.
In July 1991, Hawkins released his album Black Music for White People. The record features covers of two Tom Waits compositions: "Heart Attack and Vine" (which, later that year, was used in a European Levi's advertisement without Waits' permission, resulting in a lawsuit), and "Ice Cream Man" (which, contrary to what one might suppose, is. a Waits original and not a cover of the John Brim classic).

Screamin' Jay is an underrated American legend. At once operatic, comical, powerful, and demented, he is a truly unique voice in the pantheon. He was marginalized largely because most people cannot separate amazing chops from hilarity. most people will never truly discover this cat, and we his fans do not lament this fact. Zombies were once cool and exclusive, but in latter days every average. Well, this 1991 album is pretty entertaining. Sure, his age has restricted him from being as caffeinated as his younger days, but don't be fooled by his age. He's still crazy and has a voice powerful enough to blow you through the wall.
