This CD, Lights at Night by The Hong Kong, is a really solid slab of instrumental indie rock. They wear their influences well, the Cars and DEVO being the most obvious, to my ears.

Can visit at night and day. Hong Kong city from Victoria Peak. We’d already hiked both Lion Rock and Dragon’s Back over the previous two days. They each offered awesome daytime views of the soaring buildings, gorgeous mountains and shimmering blue waters. Zow! The new-new-wave synth-driven onslaught is definitely in full swingwith one of the newest entries into the fray being The Hong Kong. Slowlysmouldering, the thick synth lines wind themselves around the simple, uneffected guitar as the straight up drumming keeps things driving forward.Note: The Hong Kong are one of the many "The..." bands of the moment (ie,The Faint, The Vue, The Lapse, The Go, etc).from Aquarius Records New Arrivals #84 -- February 1 2000 emailhttps://www.aquariusrecords.org/archives/84.html

This CD, Lights at Night by The Hong Kong, is a really solid slab of instrumental indie rock. They wear their influences well, the Cars and DEVO being the most obvious, to my ears. If there is one critisism of this material, it is the same critisism I've always had of instrumental bands who play in this style, like Pell Mell--with music this pop-based and accessible, it is almost criminal not to have vocals over it. Potential vocal melodies really jump out at you with music like this and when they're not being performed, it can be a bit frustrating. However, that's just my opinion. Is this a good CD that deserves a listen? Absolutely. At the very least, Lights at Night could wind up being your favorite driving music for long roadtrips. That's not bad at all.from Uncle Dan's House of Smut - Short Cuts 12/29/01http://www.geocities.ws/houseofsmut/sc_turducken.html
