The James Last Orchestra was a big-band orchestra. The orchestra was established in 1964 as a studio orchestra, led by jazz musician Hans Last. The orchestra started touring in 1968 and has been very popular worldwide. From 1965, Polydor Records named him 'James Last', as they thought the name 'James' would be more suitable for the international market.

James Last (Hans Last, April 17, 1929 in Bremen, † June, 9, 2015 in Florida) was a German composer and big band leader with a large fan base in Europe and world-wide. Last's trademark was arranging pop hits in a big-band style; his series of "party albums" is equally well-known. Over the course of his career, he has sold well over 100 million albums. Last learned how to play piano as child, switching to bass as a teenager.

A "very small" one even because besides James Last, Ray Conniff, Bert Kaempfert and Franck Pourcel, there aren't too many other orchestra conductors who arrange nearly all of their songs themselves. Would it be a coincidence that these same orchestras are the most popular ones and have the largest audiences ?. Guess not : the arrangement of a song makes all the difference ! Written by the Brazilian composer Damilo Caymmi, here, from his 1970 album "With Compliments", is James Last with his Orchestra playing the superbly arranged "Andança".
