Mouseman Cloud is the beyond-prolific GBV frontman Robert Pollard's first solo LP since Factory, and comparisons between the two are inevitable. Recorded with his longtime foil Todd Tobias- and, according to Pollard, with the emphasis on wordplay, not songcraft - Mouseman is, tune for tune, nearly Factory's equal. But, like so much of Pollard's recent solo work, the lack of warm bodies in the room throughout Mouseman is practically something you can hear, with its bad decisions lined up right alongside the good ones. Pollard seems bound and determined to make Mouseman even weirder, drilling its left-field, lyrics directly into your skull. But up against even a standard-issue Pollardian ripper like "Bats Flew Up"- which, being about bats and all, is plenty weird itself- these flat, rather forced attempts at oddballery give Mouseman a scattered, self-conscious feel it never quite shakes for more than a couple of minutes at a time.
Mouseman Cloud, Pollard's first solo record of 2012 but fifth of the very-young 2010s, is a pretty straightforward collection of the type of truncated short story-style indie rock we've come to expect from the man, and one more segment of his incredibly slow evolution.
Each Robert Pollard album (or Guided by Voices release) features some variation on Pollard's love for melodic pop songs where the roots of punk and psychedelia are somewhere in evidence. Mouseman Cloud is mostly a collection of quick, tuneful scraps: pop aphorisms for a world too busy to focus for too long. In fact, due to the tunes' relatively quick nature, the three songs that do exceed the three-minute mark sound like opuses.

Robert Pollard's new solo album Mouseman Cloud shows the Guided By Voices frontman in a playful and spontaneous mood. This is a record by a guy who just wants to rock, and not have to worry about how that rock will be received by anyone other than himself. While the songs here are not a world away from anything you'll find on GBV's new Let's Go Eat the Factory album, the emphasis on Mouseman Cloud is on wordplay rather than melody, on unkempt exploration rather than traditional song structure. All the great melodies you would expect from Bob? They are here. Lots of great singing, and you can imagine Bob dragging on the cigarette and doing athletic leg kicks throughout the album, while taking the occasional pull on a Miller Lite. Excellent and evocative lyrics, as always, and "Mouseman Cloud" is the total visual package with a great pic of Bob on the front cover and some of his best and most straightforward collage work on the inside. Throughout this, there is fantastic rawk music from Todd Tobias.
