This is an intriguing, if unnecessarily enigmatic, compilation album of rare Lee "Scratch" Perry productions from his Black Ark period. And although the sound quality is impeccable, all drawn from the original master tapes, the lack of information will leave many fans frustrated. Heartbeat can normally be counted on for helpful liner notes, but as it licensed the tapes not from Perry but from Alvin Ranglin, neither party may have been clear on just what was within. And how did Ranglin come by these tapes? Apparently they were surety Perry left on a loan that remained unpaid.

This album is a total gem from Scratch. The way Soundsz was put together is how a dub album is meant to be. The beats are fierce, the lyrics are strong, and the album holds itself together perfectly (unlike some of the throw-togethers the record cos. release).

Lee Scratch Perry - Soundzs From The Hot Line (1992) .Although Roast Fish Collie Weed & Cornbread stands as Scratch's only solo album from the Black Ark, Soundzs From The Hotline acts as a second, posthumous solo album. Ashes & Dust" ("Vibrate On" with new vocals and samples, recorded at Channel One in 1982) and "In This Iwa" are pure midnight magic, while "Bionic Rats" and "When You Walk" are first rate.
