Reckoning is the second studio album by the American alternative rock band . released on April 9, 1984 by . Produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, the album was recorded at Reflection Sound Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina, over 16 days in December 1983 and January 1984. Dixon and Easter intended to capture the sound of . s live performances, and used binaural recording on several tracks.

abandoned the enigmatic post-punk experiments of Murmur for their second album, Reckoning, returning to their garage pop origins instead. Opening with the ringing "Harborcoat," Reckoning runs through a set of ten jangle pop songs that are different not only in sound but in style from the debut. Where Murmur was enigmatic in its sound, Reckoning is clear, which doesn't necessarily mean that the songs themselves are straightforward. Michael Stipe continues to sing powerful melodies without enunciating, but the band has a propulsive kick that makes the music vital and alive.

How ‘Reckoning’ Surpassed All Expectations For . looked to record the follow-up to ‘Murmur’, the bar set for their second album ‘Reckoning’ was already exceedingly high. Published on. October 10, 2017. the frenetic touring of 1983 continued unabated after the release of Reckoning. The band’s second tour of duty in small-scale UK and European clubs was already underway when Reckoning was released, and, during the summer and early autumn of ’84, their Little America tour of the US saw them stepping up to larger auditoriums such as LA’s Hollywood Palladium and San Francisco’s Warfield Theatre, in California, and to New York’s.

Album · 1984 · 10 Songs. Certainly a less mind-altering experience than its predecessor, Reckoning was hardly a retreat; its often more straightforward charms served to bring another view of the band’s gifts to light. Strong hints of acoustic-based glories to come were present in moments as varied as the countryish college-radio hits So. Central Rain and (Don’t Go Back to) Rockville and the raga-rock experiment Time After Time, while full-on stompers like Pretty Persuasion and Little America showcased drummer Bill Berry as a cogent musical engine.

Declaring Reckoning to be . s "best" album sells short just how many different kinds of great albums . But, more so than any other . record, Reckoning is unified and energized by the very restlessness that has driven the band to explore so many different ideas and identities. It is this paradoxical engine of transparency and mystery that has made the band so unique, regardless of the particular approach they choose to take for a given record. Any way you look at it, this is .
