Album · 2018 · 11 Songs. After the pop direction of third album English Graffiti, The Vaccines return to their London rock ’n’ roll roots with taut riffs, shouty choruses and the fearless sense of fun that characterised their 2011 debut. Bright-eyed vocals and punchy guitar match the urgency of the songs’ lyrics- You can’t change me, can you? screams Justin Hayward-Young on the infectiously upbeat I Can’t Quit. Elsewhere, the raging Nightclub pulsates with nostalgia for student life, while the contemplative and romantic Maybe (Luck of the Draw) offers a brief but emotive slowing of pace.
Combat Sports proves to be another dynamic album for the Vaccines, one with a fresh spin.

Combat Sports is their shortest album yet, with none of its 11 tracks straying over four minutes, all in bursts of compact energy. Each song has a short guitar solo, while riffs and hooks abound, in stories of combative love and sex couched in Young’s characteristically wry lyrics. If it were another time, this would have signaled big things for The Vaccines.
Combat Sports’ has been a battle for The Vaccines: against internal strife – drummer Pete Robertson has departed since 2015’s third album ‘English Graffiti’ and Justin Young and guitarist Freddie Cowan were punching each other’s faces in on the last day of recording; against health and lifestyle issues (the new ‘nervous exhaustion’?) because, y’know, too much squash and life drawing ca.
Combat Sports, therefore, represents the band’s attempt to mature. However, unlike cheese or whisky, The Vaccines do not mature well. The first few songs of Combat Sports are traditional basic Vaccines songs – Put It on a T-Shirt snuggles warmly in its A, D and Fm with a C thrown in now and then to spice things up; I Can’t Quit is a barrage of alternating Cs and Fs; later Someone To Lose hops between Bs, C and F with. an almost identical rhythm. And then the album changes. Your Love is my Favourite Band drops some of the band’s signature stylistic features for a more generic indie sound, and subsequent songs boot those features out the window.
