Watercolor is the debut album by Porter Ray, released March 10, 2017 via Sub Pop. The album was recorded in various studios in Seattle, mostly mixed by Erik Blood (Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, Tacocat), with a few songs co-mixed by Vitamin D (Macklemore, Abstract Rude, Black Sheep). Watercolor was produced by B Roc, with additional songs produced by DJ El Grande, KMTK, and Tele Fresco. It is vocally flavored by guest appearances from THEE Satisfaction’s Stas THEE Boss, Cashtro, Nate Jack, and Jus Moni

Watercolor uses pretty much the exact same tricks everyone else uses nowadays. Its lyrics are an ode to typicality, but it’d be a lie to omit the fact that it can strike with poignancy and soul. Porter is also apparently a master of balance, for his raw, often passive aggressive delivery keeps the overall sound from falling into the pit of apathy. It may not start off all that confidently. Certainly the song Waves is a solid track, but its rather drab atmosphere fails to set up just what exactly you are about to experience.

In 2009, Porter Ray Sullivan’s brother, Aaron, was shot and killed during an altercation he had no stake in; when the Seattle MC’s son was born a few years later, he named him after his late sibling. Much of Watercolor, Sullivan’s airy, classicist debut, pivots between these two Aarons-one a symbol of the graveyard’s call, the other of the future’s persistence. Up until recently, the particulars of Sullivan’s personal life have been asides in the exaggerated, smoke-session retellings of old conquests, as on the jazzy 2015 EP Nightfall.
Watercolor is the long-awaited label debut from Seattle’s Porter Ray. Porter is a Seattle based MC who caught the attention of Shabazz Palaces’ Ishmael Butler, who signed him to the label in 2014. Watercolor is a snapshot of Porter’s life and the lives of his friends growing up in Seattle. Porter’s influences – including hip-hop classics like.
Artist: Porter Ray. Label: Sub Pop. Genre: Hip-Hop & Rap. That certain something in the water in Seattle when it comes to hip-hop has produced another winner. Like Shabazz Palaces and THEESatisfaction – both of whom are represented on Watercolor – Porter Ray is more interested in following off-beam angles than adhering to a clearly defined straight and narrow path. Again and again on this expansive and often thrilling album, Ray shows a bracing command of detail when it comes to knocking out thoughts and tracks about the big themes of life and living.
