Usually, one wouldn’t say the following, but upon dissection of The Apostasy, the name entitling Behemoth’s 9th full-length studio album, I’m not entirely convinced. Many bands are giving their albums obvious names these days just to get their point across upon first glance, and if I don’t have to work between the lines, all the better. As for Polish titans, they’re a little late on the announcement, considering the band weren’t exactly devout in any way from the beginning.
An Apostasy is an act that marks a departure, and this album is indeed a departure for Behemoth. Released in 2007, The Apostasy is less of a mix of black metal and death metal, and instead tries for more of a melodic brutal death sound. Nergal, the frontman and manager of Behemoth, as well as composer and arranger and all sorts of great stuff, has produced another solid album. But that's all it is, solid. It's not that I don't like it.

Polish death metal heavyweights Behemoth added more ballast to their already formidable and lengthy discography with 2007's APOSTASY. Lead singer Negral's gruff vocals, which sound like they're erupting from the earth's molten core, lend APOSTASY's songs their ominous thrill, but the band's frenetic, crushing attack is the bedrock. The occasional appearance of unique instrumentation, choir chants and soprano leads, and delicate piano passages help keep the sonic landscape varied and intriguing.
