Johann Sebastian Bach Johannes-Passion. La Petite Bande - Sigiswald Kuijken. Soloists Gerlinde Sämann soprano Petra Noskaiová alto Christoph Genz tenor, Evangelist Jens Hamann bass, Jesus. The orchestra takes its name and constitution from Lully’s own orchestra at the court of Louis XIV. All its members are internationally renowned specialists in the early music field. Although originally La Petite Bande was not meant to become a permanent orchestra, the success of the recordings was such that they began to give concerts regularly. This does not apply for DXD selection.
Following their acclaimed recording of the Brandenburg Concertos, Sigiswald Kuijken leads his ensemble La Petite Bande in Bach's four Orchestral Suites. Kuijken has chosen to use an unusually small ensemble. Alongside the harpsichord, the continuo group consists of two violones, a bass instrument significantly larger than the baroque cello and which produces a more resonant sound due to its larger body and thicker strings.
Artist: La Petite Bande, Sigiswald Kuijken Title: Johann Sebastian Bach: h-Moll-Messe Year Of Release: 2009 Label: Challenge Records Northstar Recordings Genre: Classical Quality: DSF Stereo DSD64/2. Recorded at San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spain), Teatro Auditorio, 16-19 March 2008. It would be hard to imagine a greater contrast between performances of Bach's B minor Mass than Otto Klemperer's 1967 recording featuring the New Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus, and Sigiswald Kuijken's 2009 version with La Petite Band. Klemperer's recording features a star-studded cast of soloists and sounds as if it were carved from giant slabs of granite, while Kuijken is seated in the concertmaster's chair, leading a performance with one voice to a part.
La Petite Bande is a Belgium-based ensemble specialising in Baroque music played on period instruments. They are particularly known for their recordings of works by Corelli, Rameau, Handel, and Bach. The ensemble was brought together in 1972 by Sigiswald Kuijken, originally for the one-off purpose of recording Lully's comédie-ballet, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, conducted by Gustav Leonhardt for the Deutsche Harmonia Mundi label
