There Is Sweet Music: English Choral Songs, 1890 - 1950. If heaven plays music, John Rutter and his singers have a leg-up, in my book, as star performers. The melodies and sheer euphoria felt listening to the beauty and innocence of these gorgeous songs brings joy, tears, rapture to the heart. Listening to John Rutter's music, I feel connected to oneness, and the sense that all is well. His music stirs goodness and love. These are all Rutter-composed pieces, directed by Rutter himself. If you have any interest in religious choral music at all, you must get this album! One of the highlights of my musical life was attending a concert of a University of Maryland choir in which my mom sang, that featured Rutter as a guest conductor. Listening to this album is almost as good!

These 2004 performances by John Rutter and the splendid Cambridge Singers mark the first serious attempt to record a representative album of Bennett 's secular and sacred pieces for choir; and due to the favorable attention it has already received, this handsome collection may inspire other, more extensive surveys. This program is divided in three parts: occasional pieces, mostly settings of English poetry of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; a Missa Brevis in Latin, Bennett 's single liturgical work; and a set of Christmas carols.
