Murmur is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band . released on April 12, 1983 by . Murmur drew critical acclaim upon its release for its unusual sound, defined by lead singer Michael Stipe's cryptic lyrics, guitarist Peter Buck's jangly guitar style, and bass guitarist Mike Mills' melodic basslines. started recording their debut album in December 1982.

Even though it is firmly in the tradition of American folk-rock, post-punk, and garage rock, Murmur sounds as if it appeared out of nowhere, without any ties to the past, present, or future. Part of the distinctiveness lies in the atmospheric production, which exudes a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the remarkably accomplished songwriting.

Murmur is the debut studio album by the American alternative rock band . Since its release, Murmur has featured heavily in various "must have" lists compiled by the music media. In 1989, it was rated number eight on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s. In 2003, the TV network VH1 named Murmur the 92nd greatest album of all time. Some of the more prominent of these lists to feature Murmur are shown below; this information is adapted from acclaimedmusic.

Just four and a half years after the release of their debut album, Murmur, the band’s dynamic fifth album, Document, had zoomed up to N. 0 on the Billboard 200. Within another five years, they would be one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Murmur was a work of studied ingenuousness, which is to say that . went to considerable pains to present themselves and their music as ineffable, ethereal, elemental. This was an album that appeared utterly unconcerned about whether you loved it or not. When Murmur first appeared in 1983, on Miles Copeland’s . label, there was already some vague awareness of . s existence – a debut single, Radio Free Europe, had appeared on a tiny independent label in 1981, and a five-track EP, Chronic Town, released the following year by .

Risky Strong Dromedary
How's this compare to an original pressing? I own a first pressing and was curious if this version has any noticeable differences.

Gold as Heart
I'm not a fan of my original pressing or my 180g pressing from 2009ish. The original pressing is pretty thin sounding and the repress from '09 has a pressing defect that makes it tough to play. I have this MOFI on its way. Can't wait to spin it. I hear it is quite bass-heavy, as the original tapes sounded. Should be exactly what I'm looking for. I'll report back when I get a chance to hear it.

Tto
Have both and this is excellent, I didn’t play them back to back, but I think they both sound great. Nothing to object to in this version and the background is dead quite

Matty
Yeah me too - my first edition is well well played.... how is this?
