Kintsugi is the eighth studio album by American indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie, released on March 31, 2015, on Atlantic Records. Death Cab for Cutie knew immediately that Kintsugi would fit perfectly as the title of their eighth studio album. Considering what we were going through internally, and with what a lot of the lyrics are about, it had a great deal of resonance for us - the idea of figuring out how to repair breaks and make them a thing of beauty, says bassist Nick Harmer. Kintsugi is the band’s first time recording with a producer other than their own Chris Walla
The eighth studio album from Death Cab For Cutie will be the final one with lead guitarist/founding member Chris Walla, who announced he would be leaving the band after this record. Bassist Nick Harmer and frontman Ben Gibbard explained: NH: The album’s called Kintsugi. NH: In the West, if you break an heirloom, you either throw it away or you make the repair as invisible as possible, but there’s this artistic movement in Japan where the repair of it, the damage of it, is more important as part of the history of something than repairing it to its original state. BG: This is an opportunity for the band to become something it could only become by losing a founding member. It’s our goal to make records that rank amongst the best work we’ve ever done

Death Cab for Cutie named their eighth studio album after a Japanese art movement in which broken ceramics are fused together again with precious metals. Before blossoming into a quietly devastating break-up tune-frontman Ben Gibbard’s specialty- opener No Room in Frame starts with a hypnotic instrumental snippet that Walla weaves throughout
