Nothin' but the Blues is a 1977 album by Johnny Winter. The album has the following dedication: "I'd like to dedicate this album to all the people who enjoy my kind of blues and especially to Muddy Waters for giving me the inspiration to do it and for giving the world a lifetime of great blues. Johnson mentored Shines and they toured together throughout the South while Shines was still a teenager in the 1930s. Shines went on to have a recording career that lasted until his death, and his work bridged the gap between Delta and modern Chicago Blues. His high, keening voice is both haunting and expressive. His guitar playing - slide or standard, acoustic or electric - expounds on the Delta style he learned from Johnson.

No less than a founding father of modern blues, James 'Johnny" Shines was a valued singer/slide guitarist whose creative impulses, technical command, and expressive candor were at an extraordinarily high level in the decade or so following his mid-1960s "rediscovery. This 1970 session includes several inspired solo performances that hark back to his prewar Delta and Memphis country blues years, another elevated period in his venerable career. Out of Standing At The Crossroads, Too Wet To Plow, Worried Blues Ain't Bad, and this record, his singing is at its earth-shaking best on this record. I look forward to purchasing Traditional Delta Blues and Hey Ba-Ba-Re-Bop.
