Haydn: String Quartets, O. 3. Haydn: String Quartets Op. 17. Franz Joseph Haydn. Recorded in Budapest between 1993 and 2006, this complete set of the Haydn String Quartets performed by the Festetics Quartet represents the most challenging project accomplished by Michel Bernstein, the mythical founder of Arcana who died a few months after the recording of the very last volume.
Haydn: The Complete String Quartets (Box Set). Really wonderful performances of these wonderful quartets, and in delightfully good sound for the period ('30's). Once you are used to a sound with little "room" around it, any feeling of working through antiquated recording simply vanishes. The Pro Arte knew how to play, and play with, music by that most civilized and joyous of composers, and their "dated' style with its portamentos may be closer, at least in spirit, to what Haydn might have heard. Be that as it may, any lover of quartets, or of Haydn, really needs to own these discs.
Album · 2011 · 53 Songs. Andante & Minuet from String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 103. By Franz Joseph Haydn. Quintet in B-Flat Major for Two Violins, Two Violas and Cello, K. 174. Juilliard String Quartet & Harold Wright.
64, No. 4. The most famous quartet in the set, the String Quartet in D major, Op. 64, No. 5 ("The Lark"), lives up to its nickname with its swooping melody even if the nickname was not Haydn's own, and the slow movements in general are engaging and charming. Recommended, especially for anyone interested in a historically informed interpretation of these much-played quartets.
74, 76 and 77. The form which Haydn defined and 'brought to perfection' (Grove's). 11 string quartets in complete score, his last and best. The first in a projected series of the complete Haydn string quartets.
