Linda Perhacs is easily the most celebrated dental hygienist to ever have recorded a classic psychedelic folk album. That album, 1970’s Parallelograms, has persisted over decades, even as Perhacs herself moved on with her life after the record failed and copies of it slowly disappeared from print. One of those people was the leader of the prog-metal band Opeth, who did as much as anyone to keep copies of Parallelograms circulating. In other words, The Soul Of All Natural Things is more purely new age than Perhacs' first record. God as a force, as a character, suffuses these songs, whispering to wind and waves on the title track and carrying the world's "river of souls" on "River of God". Immunity" is a plea to God to help listen for his love.

The Soul of All Natural Things does stand on its own in terms of quality, but is unmistakably an extension of the sonic, spiritual continuum Perhacs' began - and probably thought she left - on Parallelograms. Her uncommon, even singular approach to singing, recording, and writing, remains fully in evidence here.

Perhacs’ own story is as unexpected and odd as the album itself. Working as a dental hygienist, she was quizzed by one of her patients, I can’t believe this is all you do. That patient happened to be film composer Leonard Rosenman, who, after hearing of Perhacs’ double-life as a Topanga Canyon songwriter, opened the doors for Perhacs to record Parallelograms . Jon Dale Q&A Linda Perhacs During the sessions for The Soul Of All Natural Things, you worked with other artists, such as Julia Holter. How do you feel these new presences changed the way you make and think about music? The recording sessions were pure magic.
In 1970 Linda Perhacs released an album called Parallelograms. It didn't sell at the time but developed a cult following. 44 years later, Perhacs finally released record number two, The Soul of all Natural Things, making for the longest gap ever between album releases. The atmosphere today is so much freer," explained the singer to NME. "That's what made me come back. Perhacs told Mojo magazine the story behind the album's title track: "This is a song that could only have been written in the 70s," she said
