Soul Blues, is an album by blues musician Lightnin' Hopkins recorded in 1963 and released on the Bluesville label. I'm a Crawling Black Snake" which has little in common with Blind Lemon Jefferson's song, is framed by oddly impressionistic guitar".

The first song on this album, "I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own," adescribes an encounter with a bearded man claiming to be Jesus Christ. Hopkins also puts his personal stamp on Willie Dixon's "My Babe" and Smokey Hogg's "Too Many Drivers," among others.

Lightnin' Hopkins Format: Vinyl. For Soul Blues Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound created a 24/192K hi-res file from a needle drop on a clean original LP. This was done because the tape supplied for mastering proved to be from a needle drop itself, not the original, which has been lost since the early 1970s. Smith took the original LP, did a new needle drop and meticulously worked to eliminate the minimal tics and pops that remained. Then he mastered the album for LP and SACD from the hi-res file. We are amazed by the quality," says Chad Kassem, Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions CEO. "Now that the tape is lost,. Black Ghost Blues (Album Version) by Lightnin' Hopkins.

I've got a fair amount of Lightnin' Hopkins, this LP ranks among the top. Being primarily a solo artist, many of his releases with accompaniment are pretty shakey. Having been paired with a jazz rhythm section was a great idea and works well. "I'm Going To Build Me A Heaven Of My Own" is one of Hopkins' best compositions, no throw away lines here. You can tell he put some time into writing this one. This is a must have for any Lightnin' lover. The session recorded by "Van Gelder" has superior sonics. If you shop for this stick with the original 1965 pressing. I also have the 1991 OBC lp "De Lancie" remaster and the sound quality is far inferior on softer grade vinyl. When I went about digitizing this one I used the original even though it was much more labor intensive.
