Airto Moreira was born in Itaiópolis, Brazil, into a family of folk healers, and raised in Curitiba and São Paulo. Showing an extraordinary talent for music at a young age, he became a professional musician at age 13, noticed first as a member of the samba jazz pioneers Sambalanço Trio and for his landmark recording with Hermeto Pascoal in Quarteto Novo in 1967. Shortly after, he followed his wife Flora Purim to the United States. 1984: Misa Espiritual: Airto's Brazilian Mass (Harmonia Mundi) – Gil Evans, WDR Big Band, WDR Strings, Marcos Silva. 1985: Three-way Mirror – with Purim and Joe Farrell (his last recording).

Airto Moreira alkreskis en Curitiba kaj São Paulo. En 1966 li estis muzkisto de Trio Novo, akompanis inter alie ankaŭ kantiston Geraldo Vandré. Kiam en 1967 aliĝis Hermeto Pascoal, ĝi nun nomiĝisQuarteto Novo. 1984: Misa Espiritual:Airto's Brazilian Mass Harmonia Mundi – Gil Evans, WDR Big Band, WDR arĉinstrumentistoj, Marcos Silva. 1985: Three-Way Mirror kunlabore kun Purim kaj Joe Farrell. 1986: Latino: Aqui Se Puede Montuno – Purim, Alphonso Johnson, Cachete Maldonado, Donaldo Alias, Frank Colon, Geni da Silva, Giovanni Hidalgo, Jeff Elliot, Farrell, Jorge Dalto, Kei Akagi, Keith Jones, Larry Nass, Laudir de Oliveira, Neves, Rafael Jose, de Souza, Tite Curet Alonso, Tony Moreno.

In 1974 Airto formed his first band in the . Fingers with Flora Purim. Since then they have performed constantly all over the world and recorded their own album for major record companies in Europe and America. Airto remains one of popular music’s most in demand percussionists. His collection of instruments, along with his knack for playing the right sound at the right moment, has made him the first choice of many producers and bandleaders

For 1983's Misa Espiritual: Airto's Brazilian Mass, they paired with iconic arranger Gil Evans and Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira. Similarly, they backed pianist/composer Jim McNeely on East Coast Blow Out, which also featured guitarist John Scofield, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Equally auspicious projects followed, including 1991's Electricity with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and 1992's Vince Mendoza and Arif Mardin-led album Jazzpaña, which earned the ensemble their first German Jazz Award
