This collection of songs represents the very first successful American attempt to use a record as propaganda and promotion. In 1965, Joe McDonald was to have performed at a demonstration to protest the draft in Oakland, California; to politicize his audience, he and his then (and sometimes current) associate Barry Melton and Ed Denson (Kicking Mule Records) decided to form a jug band to accompany them at this event. Along the way, they also decided to make a record to sell at the demonstration.

Prior to signing with Vanguard Records in 1967, Country Joe McDonald and his group, the Fish, had already recorded two low-budget EPs as "talking versions" of McDonald's self-realized magazine Rag Baby - a Bay Area adaptation of the folk magazine Broadside. Collectors Items: The First Three EP's is a single CD that compiles the highly collectable 7" records that allowed Country Joe & the Fish national attention via the underground "head shops" that stocked Rag Baby.

Before they burst into mainstream stardom via "Woodstock," Country Joe & The Fish recorded a pair of "talking magazines" - 7" EPs that were an outgrowth of McDonald's political publication, Rag Baby. The first, recorded in 1965, contains the original versions of a pair of songs that would turn up (in re-recorded form) on the band's debut album. The flip side of this original EP contained a pair of tunes from folk singer Peter Krug, "Fire in the City" and "Johnny's Gone in the War," each rendered in a straight ahead vocal-and-guitar arrangement. In 1966 CJ & The Fish cut a second Rag Baby EP.

in'-to-Die Rag" is a song by the American psychedelic rock band Country Joe and the Fish, written by Country Joe McDonald, and first released as the opening track on the extended play Rag Baby Talking Issue No. 1, in October 1965 (see 1965 in music). in'-to-Die Rag"'s dark humor and satire made it one of the most recognized protest songs against the Vietnam War. Critics cite the composition as a classic of the counterculture era.

In February 1967, Country Joe and the Fish entered Sierra Sound Laboratories to record their debut album, Electric Music for the Mind and Body, with Charters and Denson overseeing the process. a b "Collectors Items: The First Three EP's (CD booklet)".
