Friday, 13 July 2012. Written by Ben Bland. It would be a bit harsh to say that 'Unearth' fits wholly into that description but at the same time this album never reaches the heights that Grasscut really could be scaling. An interesting sonic palette that ends up somewhere in the region of ambient new age electronica (you don’t need to tell me that there is no such thing) provides 'Unearth' with strong foundations. Although largely electronic, there is something pleasingly organic about some of the compositions here. Some of the melodies are undeniably enchanting as well.

Recorded impulsively – and sometimes secretly – on mobile phones, sampled from vinyl, or old films, it was characters such as these that originally inspired the music of grasscut.
For the Unearth shows, Grasscut c. .Grasscut are Andrew Phillips (music, words, production, vocals, keyboards, guitar) and Marcus O'Dair (management, keyboards, double bass). Grasscut’s debut album, 1 Inch: ½ Mile, came with a map depicting a walk around the lost Sussex village of Balsdean, together with sonic clues leading to a concealed artefact. Released on Ninja Tune in 2010, it received airplay from BBC Radio 1, 2 and 3, as well as 6Music and Xfm. Grasscut have remixed Coldcut, Bonobo and Jaga Jazzist and, in turn, have been remixed by Nathan Fake and Bibio.
