Written by Paul Scott-Bates8 June, 2013. Dirtmusic – Troubles (Glitterbeat Records). The new album from members of The Walkabouts and Bad Seeds plus several Malian musicians is an album of quite stunning quality. The story goes that after the departure of Chris Brokaw, the remaining members of Dirtmusic travelled to Bamako in Mali with lyrics but nothing else – no songs, no tunes, no ideas. Chicken Scratch blasts off straight into an urban African groove.

The previous album by Aussie rockers Chris Eckman (the Walkabouts) and Hugo Race (the Bad Seeds) was a brave fusion with Tuareg band Tamikrest. This follow-up, cut in a makeshift studio in Bamako, at first seems more of the same, its rock guitars riding African rhythms, heavy on shimmering atmosphere but light on structured songs.
Dirtmusic’s previous album Troubles, released in June of last year, was recorded in Bamako, Mali in the dark days of the 2012 political upheaval. A propulsive collection of cinematic Afro-rock, Troubles for the most part rose out of improvisational sessions involving Hugo Race (Fatalists, Bad Seeds) and Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts) of Dirtmusic and the nimble, balafon driven Ben Zabo band.
