On The Impossible Past serves as a catalytic interlude tying the narrative threads of its eponymous album together. A snapshot memory of a car crash, it encapsulates the feelings of disenfranchisement, misery and hopelessness that run through On The Impossible Past. In this song more than anywhere else on the record, politics bleed into emotional dismay ; On The Impossible Past is a picture of disillusion with the American dream.

On the Impossible Past went on to be voted "Album Of The Year" 2012 for both Absolutepunk. It was also voted "Album Of The Year" by RockZone magazine in Spain. The Menzingers released a split 7" EP with The Bouncing Souls in November 2013. Both bands released a new original song on the split, along with a cover of one of the other band's songs. The Menzingers covered "Kate is Great" from The Bouncing Souls, and The Bouncing Souls covered "Burn After Writing" from On the Impossible Past.

On The Impossible Past is the third studio album from The Menzingers. It was released on February 20th, 2012, to widespread critical acclaim. Ending up high on the punk scene’s end-of-year lists, the album was praised for its deeply nostalgic, near-conceptual approach to telling a story about growing up in the NEPA area. Personally experienced aspects like disenfranchisement, drug abuse, poverty, social exclusion and mental illness join up in a coherent critique of the US’s policy choices in the Noughties, cementing On The Impossible Past as one of the definitive punk albums of the 2010’s. On the Impossible Past Q&A.

Ever since their inception in 2006, The Menzingers did not quite seem like your average punk-rock band. Sure, their debut LP 'A Lesson in the Abuse of Information Technology' was as uneven and raucous as what their peers were releasing, while follow-up 'Chamberlain Waits' added the necessary dose of melody and anthemic sing-alongs. Whatever it was, the next step of their fascinating progression is laid bare on third LP 'On the Impossible Past'; a compelling album which is rich in storytelling and follows the nostalgic, Americana themed template set down by New Jersey's The Gaslight Anthem. Here, it is in the song-writing which The Menzingers have undoubtedly grown markedly since their critically acclaimed second album.

Takes me at least two or three spins to fully appreciate an album. The Menzingers are a fantastic punk band that should get more attention than they already have now. The lyrics are very well thought out and meaningful. This isn't your typical punk band that's very snappy and to the point, no.

On the Impossible Past is about regrets, memories, lost friends, lost loves. It's about being torn between wanting to hang onto the past and wanting to move into the future. The Menzingers, while losing the "heavy" sound they once had, have morphed into a new being. On the Impossible Past isn't a story. It's a biography of the past. It succeeds as much on a musical level as it does on a lyrical level. Tom's voice is better than ever. The riffs are catchier than ever. The Menzingers are better than ever
