The Gap Band had given themselves some big shoes to fill in the wake of their 1982 The Gap Band IV LP. It had, of course, spawned "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" - one of the defining songs of the decade and indeed of the contemporary funk genre. But with aplomb and finesse, the band returned the next year with The Gap Band V: Jammin' and only just missed its predecessor's number one chart position. From the opening instrumental "Where Are We Going," The Gap Band V: Jammin' is a slick, smooth set dominated by some archetypal Gap Band classics.

The Gap Band enjoyed huge success throughout the '70s and '80s with their unique sound and contribution to the Funk scene. LA producer, Lonnie Simmons, signed them to his label, Total Experience Records, setting in motion what would be the start of a long and prosperous relationship between The Gap Band and Simmons. The group scored many notable hits in the late 1970's and early 1980's before releasing this, GAP BAND V: JAMMIN', hot on the heels of their most successful album, GAP BAND IV. This album reached R&B and Pop and was certified Gold.

Their 1983 album, Gap Band V, Jammin, went gold, the single Party Train peaked at R&B, and the song Jam the Motha peaked at R&B, but neither made it onto the Hot 100. The albums closer Someday featured Stevie Wonder as a guest vocalist and their next work, Gap Band VI brought them back to R&B in 1985, but the album sold fewer copies and did not go gold. Beep a Freak hit R&B, I Found My Baby peaked at on the R&B charts and that year, lead singer Charlie Wilson provided backing vocals on Zapp & Rogers R&B Computer Love. 11. Gap Band IV – Gap Band IV is the sixth album by The Gap Band, released in 1982 on Total Experience Records. The album reached on the Black Albums chart and on the Pop Albums chart, achieved platinum status, the album produced the singles Early in the Morning, You Dropped a Bomb on Me, and Outstanding.
