Fin De Siècle by PORTA NIGRA, released 16 November 2012 1. Dekadente Nächte 2. Megalomaniac 3. Der Spiegel 4. Absinthfee 5. Aas der Meere 6. Fin de Siècle 7. Tod meiner Lust Where the passage of time is irrelevant, meaningless, and trends are thereby rendered redundant, PORTA NIGRA stands alone, defiant, isolated from the pack. A different breed of beast, one that defies categorisation. These unconventional, non-conformist Germans present a debut full-length that is untainted by modern movements and fashion fads. xhrl Porta Nigra are a German duo that music which will appeal to the dark/black metal aficionado. This LP takes as its theme the degenerate mentality of the rich at the close of 1800s when apathy, cynicism and moral decadence permeated the upper social crust of Western Europe. Dark, critical and very insightful, I consider this essential listening.

Fin De Siècle appeared in Europe a couple months ago and has just made its way to American shores this week. The title translates to end of the century, but its meaning delves much further into themes of decadence and the overall degradation of society associated with European mindsets at the close of the 19th century. The sound swells with a culturally refined version of black-dark aggression, a little like Rotting Christ in a wine bar or Alcest in an absinthe-fueled fury. But really, comparisons won’t do justice to the seven solid songs that fill out the record
