Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Baltimore Symphony Orchestra/David Zinman/Horacio Gutierrez. Not only do you get excellent performances of the 2nd and 3rd piano concertos, but also the delicious Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, offered by the gifted Horacio Gutiérrez, Cuban-born pianist extraordinaire. And further goodies: the 2nd Piano Sonata in B-Flat Minor played by Lang-Lang, as well as the haunting, wordless Vocalise sung beautifully by Sylvia McNair accompanied by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Zinman. The Baltimore forces also provide the orchestral support for the Rhapsody.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is an American symphony orchestra based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Baltimore SO has its principal residence at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, where it performs more than 130 concerts a year. In 2005, it began regular performances at the Music Center at Strathmore in Bethesda. In 1987, the Baltimore SO and its then-music director David Zinman undertook a concert tour of Europe and the Soviet Union. The Baltimore SO was the first American orchestra in 11 years to tour the Soviet Union after cultural relations resumed towards the end of the Soviet war in Afghanistan. Under Zinman the orchestra made its first visits to Chicago and the Midwest in 1990 and to East Asia in 1994, with subsequent East Asia tours in 1997 and 2002. 23; Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, op. 43, Horacio Gutiérrez, piano (Telarc).

This is Horacio Gutierrez's second recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto - the first being with Andre Previn and the LSO in the 70's. This one is very much in the same manner. It will remind one of a combination of Cliburn's fire and Rubinstein's poetry. The Rachmaninoff is also one of the best in many years. Rather than going off the deep end with its virtuosity, HG, brings sensible and musical sonorities with the right amount of spontaneity and spark of both works. He plays both pieces flawlessly and the interpretations are marvelous taking the listener on a powerful journey every time surrounded by perfection in the lyrical expressions. The recordings are of the highest quality. The notes from the piano can be heard clearly.
