The Much Ado Suite (Op 11), isn't, well, much. The pre-teen EWK wrote far better (like Der Schneemann (The Snowman) (1908), another must for your collection). But, stacked up side-by-side with Op 40, Much Ado hasn't a change. Consider it a pretty bonus. What is odd and disappointing about this recording is that the "Much Ado About Nothing" suite omits the Overture, one of Korngold's most inspired bursts of orchestral energy. Did they run out of time at the recording session, or not get a suitable take?

The symphony is backed with Korngold's incidental music for Much Ado About Nothing, composed in 1918 for the Shakespeare play and then organized into the symphonic suite heard here. The tone is lighter than the symphony, and the influence of Richard Strauss is quite strong in this youthful piece, even to the point of overt allusions to Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche in the overture.
