Composer Robert Johnson was part of the circle of Shakespeare and Ben Jonson at the beginning of the 17th century. Little of his music has survived; this release by British-American lutenist Nigel North includes most of what did. Johnson's music was probably used in Shakespeare's plays, and this album may be of interest to theatrical producers for that reason. It consists of dances: pavanes, galliards, almains (allemands), and titled pieces like The Witches' Dance (track 7), mostly of the sort that Dowland, another contemporary, also composed.

Nigel North (lute) - BBC Music Magazine, February 2011, Mor. Playing a golden-toned 10-course lute and using original manuscript sources or his own sensitive reconstructions, British lutenist Nigel North presents a delightful recital of dances by Robert Johnson, a contemporary of Shakespeare for whose plays he wrote songs and incidental music. Although they use the old forms of pavan, galliard, almain and fantasie, Johnson’s exquisite works tend towards the more expansive, lyrical style that would later flourish in the Baroque period.

Johnson was lutenist to Prince Henry (until the prince's death in 1612). He composed music for the masques and entertainments which were popular at court in the Jacobean era. For example, he wrote music for Oberon, the Faery Prince in which Prince Henry took the title role  . Have you seen the bright lily grow?" from Ben Jonson's comedy The Devil is an Ass, 1616. The best-selling recording is that of Sting on the 2006 album Songs from the Labyrinth.

The Almain Armourers' Album, a book of armour designs, is one of the V&A's great Elizabethan treasures. The book was produced in the Royal Armoury at Greenwich, London, between 1557 and 1587, and charts some of the most spectacular armour ever made. It is known as the Almain Armourers’ Album after the German armourers employed by Henry VIII from the early 16th century ('Almain' is an archaic word for German). The album contains 29 armour designs on 56 sheets, each showing a figure in full cavalry armour - posed to reveal as much of the armour as possible - with a sheet.

Johnson’s earlier dance music includes galliards and almains, simple pieces largely of melody and bass, with the harmony filled in at cadences. North’s playing reflects their function, metrical with only the barest slowing up as the dance sequence ends. Other dances, for court Masques, are more balletic.
