In fact, My Best Human Face may be Krug's most vital-sounding set of solo songs to date. It's certainly one of his most balanced, as playful as it is earnest, and as hook-driven as it is meandering.
Album · 2016 · 7 Songs. See All. Heartbreaking Bravery (with Siinai). Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped.
Just seven tracks seems an odd length for an album, especially when they are chunky (all between four minutes 40 and seven minutes, most around tes) rather than substantial. Ultimately, it is hard to shake the feeling that My Best Human Face should have given a lot more.
Krug’s first album with Siinai came closest to capturing some of that old grandeur, even if it couldn’t sustain its peaks for the whole of its 45-minute runtime. Heartbreaking Bravery found Krug returning to the sort of sweeping aural panoramas that have endeared him to many, but did so through a peculiar marriage of riff-oriented rock and rough-hewn electronic drone. Those same impulses are equally on display on My Best Human Face, albeit with a bit more polish this time around. The unfortunate thing about My Best Human Face is that it will likely be overshadowed by the resurrection of Krug’s flagship band. But while the world is certainly a better place for having Wolf Parade back in it, there’s real action happening here.
In between, Moonface occasionally releases albums made in collaboration with a Finnish Krautrock-inspired instrumental band called Siinai. That seems like a shame, because My Best Human Face is inventive and clever and packed with fantastic songs. It’s the kind of album you suspect more people would like if they got to hear it, the kind that ought to transcend a rabid cult following.

Moonface with Siinai. 8. Release date: 03 June 2016. Country: Canada, Finland. Tracking the abundance of Spencer Krug’s output over the last ten years – from Wolf Parade to Sunset Rubdown to Moonface, with Swan Lake and Frog Eyes in between – could overwhelm less-dedicated fans. Not only that, they have an EP of new material out. This may not seem like the most opportune moment for Krug to drop an album off his solo side, lest it get lost amid the hubbub of his much-beloved first band’s return to action. In a way, though, it does keep with the fluid, instinct-driven directive that propels Moonface. My Best Human Face, even in its mellower breathes of reflection, exhales an air of urgency. On My Best Human Face, Krug has a habit of circling around or homing in on an image before, or even in the middle of, one of his lyrical walkabouts.
