Emil Gilels in Prague. Mozart, Debussy, Stravinsky. Fortunately enough, Gilels' visit to Prague in May 1973 did not remain the exclusive property of the decaying memories of those who were then lucky to have the chance to actually listen to and applaud his performances; rather, it has left behind a lasting trace in the form of a recording. It is now presented to the general public, coupled here with a library recording of a Mozart sonata. Itis certain to attract a wide circle of admirers still today, 19 years from the artist's death. Great Russian pianist Emil Gilels at the 1973 Prague Spring Festival. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Full-laminated cover.

Gilels played a varied recital of Mozart, Brahms, Debussy and Stravinsky. As usual, his recording displays his sensitivity and beauty. The Mozart sonata on this CD was new to me. I was totally engaged by this performance. Gilels' tone is round and pleasing and his phrasing is pristine. Gilels always had a special affinity for Brahms. His performance of the 2nd concerto with Jochum still ranks as one of the most beautiful ever recorded. More than any other pianist, there is an inner peace - a deep inner beauty - that Gilels manages to convey

Emil Gilels is regarded by many as one of the most significant pianists of the twentieth century and is universally admired for his superb technical control and burnished tone. His interpretations of the central German-Austrian classics formed the core of his repertoire, in particular Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann as well as twentieth-century music like Debussy, Bartók and Prokofiev. Gilels made two commercial recordings of the Brahms Piano Concerto N. in the studio with Fritz Reiner and Eugen Jochum. The live recital dates from 1974 and features vibrant performances of Debussy and Prokofiev, all particular favourites of the pianist. Recorded in brilliant stereo, these WDR-sourced performances have never been released before. Previous live recordings of Gilels on ICA Classics have been Beethoven Piano Concertos Nos.

Emil Grigoryevich Gilels (Ukrainian: Емі́ль Григо́рович Гі́лельс; 19 October 1916 – 14 October 1985) was a Soviet pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time. Gilels was born to a Jewish family on 19 October 1916 (6 October, Old Style) in Odessa, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire) to Esfir and Grigory Gilels. His father worked as a clerk in a sugar refinery. His sister Elizaveta, three years his junior, was a renowned violinist.
