Most people who are aware of Dan Deacon tend to associate him with the wacky, cartoonish side of his persona: the dance contests, the trippy green skull, the pitched-up voices, the videos for "Crystal Cat" and "Drinking Out of Cups. However, his roots are in electro-acoustic composition - he earned a degree at the conservatory of music at SUNY Purchase - and he's been highly involved with the contemporary classical world. After previously working with Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov on the soundtrack to Francis Ford Coppola's 2011 thriller Twixt, Rat Film is Deacon's second feature-length film score, and the first to be commercially released. Directed by Theo Anthony, the film is a surprisingly poignant eye-opener that examines the connection between Baltimore's rat infestation and the city's history of segregation.

Rat Film (dir. Theo Anthony) is a feature-length documentary that follows rats (and the humans that love them, live with them, and kill them) to explore Baltimore's history. Sometimes opting for Philip Glass-esque chaotically lonely piano notes, as in the album's opener Redlining, other times tormenting his acoustic instruments until they are indistinguishable from electronic ones, as in Harold's Lament. The latter builds into a piece reminiscent of Carlos' Timesteps on the Clockwork Orange soundtrack. Rat Film is currently playing in select theaters across the USA

Still, Rat Film shows off increasing nuance and range in Deacon's abilities as a composer. It’s alarming as a fan to hear something so different, and the Rat Film Original Soundtrack has little to offer fans of Dan Deacon or fans or soundtracks.
