Haydn: String Quartets O. 0. Nomos Quartet Ensemble. CDs: 2 Tracks: 24 Length: 2:27:35. CD 1 of 2. (Franz) Joseph Haydn Composer. String Quartet in Bb, Ho. II:44, O. 0, N. (N. 6, 'Prussian Quartets') Work.

Haydn’s so-called Prussian Quartets (Hob. III:44-49) of 1787 were dedicated to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, an enthusiastic amateur cellist. Here, he developed the classical style of music-making, which he had shaped so decisively himself, even further. Starting with a rather simple theme, the motifs are artfully wrought – especially in the opening movement of the quartets – and it is notable that all four instrument are treated as near-equals. 50 No. 1, Ho. The Minetti Quartet offers three late Haydn masterpieces, played with plenty of high spirits and, in the slow movements, a fresh songfulness (both Opp. 64's and 76's are marked "cantabile") that's most affecting. There's practically nothing to criticize here. Founded in 2003 when its members were all only about 20 years of age, the Minetti Quartett is a hip, young string quartet emerging from Austria. Since its inception a short time ago, it has captured several respected chamber music awards, toured extensively, received guidance from the infamous Alban Berg Quartet, and recorded this debut album of three Haydn quartets on the Hänssler Classic label. The disc's liner notes contain an interview of sorts with the four members; reading it gives the impression of youthful naivety and even simplistic understanding of the music
