Afro-Cuban jazz is the earliest form of Latin jazz. It mixes Afro-Cuban clave-based rhythms with jazz harmonies and techniques of improvisation. Afro-Cuban jazz emerged in the early 1940s with the Cuban musicians Mario Bauzá and Frank Grillo "Machito" in the band Machito and his Afro-Cubans in New York City.

A definite must have in any Machito, Jazz or Afro-Cuban Jazz collection. Up first, from 1958, is "Kenya - Afro Cuban Jazz," which I would rate a notch lower than its 1959 successor "With Flute to Boot," featuring the great shape-shifting jazz flutist Herbie Mann, who was obviously in his Afro-Cuban phase phase at this time. While "Kenya" is quite strong overall, it is more of a big band LP than a modern jazz one; and with its 17 combined trumpet, trombone and sax players and nine percussionists, it can occasionally feel like overkill. The second album, "With Flute To Boot" was is notable for the fact that all the material was written and arranged by Herbie Mann. Keep in mind that this album was recorded in late 1958, before Mann made a name for himself as a recording artist in his own right.
