Each session had previously been released as four-track EPs in 1986 (The Peel Sessions 1982) and 1987 (The Peel Sessions 1981).
Peel Sessions (LP, Comp, MP). Strange Fruit. There are of course, likeminded nods to their past; 'Dreams Never End' in particular has an eerie structural similarity to the popular 'Ceremony'.
The latter tendencies, though, start to creep into view on the Peel session from the following year, with "5-8-6" pointing the way to the vigorous but characteristically glum techno-pump of Power, Corruption & Lies. Two tracks from the same session-"Too Late" and a cover of Keith.
Both, then, had ample opportunity to shock and surprise their listeners, and both grasped that opportunity with open paws
