The last time Beck truly cut loose was maybe 2006's The Information, which was lighter than either the coiled 2008 LP Modern Guilt or the slow, sepia-toned Morning Phase, which took home the Album of the Year Grammy in 2015.
Ostensibly, Beck’s 13th album, Colors, is a left turn-his most overtly pop record. He reunited with Greg Kurstin, who played in his live band before becoming a staple of Top 40 songwriting and production with Kelly Clarkson, Adele, and Sia. Together, they aimed to make an album that was uplifting, had a lot of energy, and made you want to sing along. Yet Colors is more like Beck’s downtempo records, Morning Phase and its spiritual predecessor Sea Change, in that it is largely bereft of color.

Alternative hipster Beck returns with ‘Colors,’ an effort that ends up being the opposite of his previous album, ‘Morning Phase. Finally, a new Beck album, Colors, has arrived! It’s been three years sense we’ve heard from the Scientologist hipster, who shocked the world by winning the Grammy for album of the year for Morning Phase. It was shocking because (1), the competition and (2), it was a more subdued, conservative album from the singer/songwriter. Colors is the complete opposite – not the least bit subdued. Colors kicks off Colors colorfully
As a Beck album I find the music pretty subpar for an artist of this stature- kind of like a check the boxes to fulfill my record contract obligations kind of an effort. I never find myself wanting to listen to the whole thing as an album- there are just too many throwaway tracks IMO. Reply Helpful. Beck - Colors (Slime Visualizer) 4:21. Beck - I'm So Free (Audio) 4:08. Beck - No Distraction (Audio) 4:32. Beck - Up All Night 4:25.
