David Hamilton Early life and career Hamilton grew up in London. His schooling was interrupted by World War II. As an evacuee, he spent some time in the countryside of Dorset, which inspired his work until today. As much of Hamilton's work depicts early-teen girls, often nude, he has been the subject of some controversy and even child pornography allegations, mostly from North America and Britain, similar to that which the work of Sally Mann and Jock Sturges have attracted. In the late 1990s, some people protested bookstores that stocked Hamilton's photography books but their efforts came to nothing.
Mary Gauthier was born to an unwed mother in 1962 and given up for adoption. Her album The Foundling deals with her quest to find her birth mother and to reconcile what she calls the "Orphan Feeling" she's had since childhood. She wrote "The Orphan King" on a trip to St. Vincent's Women and Infants Asylum in New Orleans, where she was taken before she was adopted. Determined not to let her mother's inability to embrace her defeat her, she repeated "I still believe in love" over and over again.
The Orphan Girl at the cemetery (also known as Young Orphan Girl in the Cemetery; French: Jeune orpheline au cimetière) (c. 1823 or 1824) is a painting by the French artist Eugène Delacroix. Believed to be a preparatory work in oil for the artist's later Massacre at Chios, Orphan Girl at the Cemetery is nevertheless considered a masterpiece in its own right.
