Olatunji was adding African beats to jazz and R&B dates back in the '60s, and does roughly the same thing on this date, fueling careening, expansive tracks that are long enough to incorporate everything from singers to numerous drummers playing traps, congas, shakers, and all manner of drums. It's infectious and among the best blends of traditional and contemporary African and American elements.

This is the second new recording by percussion master Babatunde Olatunji for Mickey Hart's series "The World. In contrast to the preceding DRUMS OF PASSION: THE BEAT, which featured a modern rock-guitar sound lent by Carlos Santana, THE INVOCATION features eleven percussionists and seven vocalists in a work of rhythm and rapture. It resonates like a polyrhythmic high mass.
