The Bootleg Series Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965–1966 (2015). The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes Complete is a compilation album of unreleased home recordings made in 1967 by Bob Dylan and the group of musicians that would become The Band, released on Legacy Records November 3, 2014. Revered for decades as the "holy grail" for music collectors and Dylan fans, the recordings have been notoriously bootlegged by collectors in various forms throughout the years, the first being arguably the first rock bootleg album, the Great White Wonder, released in July 1969. The Basement Tapes Complete is the first time the complete sessions, containing 138 tracks. That's at best half true. The performances weren't approached with any kind of gravity, and are best listened to with no reverence at all.

Despite the hits he’d been notching for a decade, he was still just another road warrior who idolized Hank Sr. but still saw him as an almost hilariously impossible standard against which to measure himself or anybody else. But the version recorded for his massive 1976 crossover album Africa Brasil exudes joy, sparks flying from every exuberant note. The record would end up getting Rod Stewart-whose Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? bore a strong resemblance-sued. The Whispers formed in Los Angeles in the mid-’60s and were hardly seen as cutting-edge by the time they released And the Beat Goes On in 1979.
The sheer amount of Dylan's output during this period is staggering. More than just a collection of outtakes, The Cutting Edge traces the development of one of music's most important figures. Even between the 14 months documented here - starting with an acoustic take of "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" and ending with a band tearing through "I Want You" - you can hear an artist growing into an unshakable confidence that would still steer his career 50 years later. It's not often new light is cast on such familiar and classic work.
