It could be read two ways; McIlwee is either conceding to cynicism as a natural state or reveling in it. My guess is the latter, judging from his deadpan disdain when delivering lines like Don’t you wanna be my perfect bae instead? and I’m out in California now/ And Ari gave me his new car/ And all the girls are so champagne. Of course, none of Charmer should be taken as an endorsementof that kind of attitude, just a depiction of it. Sometimes I think 'charm' can just be another word for 'manipulation  . Aimee Mann takes on Power Pop! She always had that influence in her music but here she surrenders to it completely. The songs are of consistently high quality and some are quite catchy. Overall one of her better releases and will probably be something of a "grower" for me.

Another way to do it is that you hear Mr. Yoakam scream a few times: on A Heart Like Mine and his cover of Joe and Rose Lee Maphis’s Dim Lights, Thick Smoke. Continue reading the main story. Charmer, her eighth studio album, represents a sunny turn for her, at least in relative terms: it revolves around the fragile psyches and misplaced affections of others, with lyrics that lean heavily on the second-person singular and a sound that evokes some untroubled, late-1970s convergence of soft rock and new wave. That it all goes down so easily seems like a sneaky way to make a point. Ms. Mann’s driving interest here, after all, is the insecure, calculating core beneath any charismatic exterior

Beatlesque harmonies, Costello-esque bile, really bad romance: Yep, it's an Aimee Mann album. Mann's lyrics strain for cleverness, sagging under the weight of mixed metaphors. "When you're weak, it's a Holy Grail/You're two-for-one, it's a fire sale. But there's little new here, and even less charm. Listen to "Charmer": In This Article: Aimee Mann.
