Bach Werke für Oboe und Chor. Albrecht Mayer 31/6/2010. Jumping from Mozart on Deutsche Grammophon to Bach on Decca, oboist Albrecht Mayer continues to explore transcriptions as well as works originally for his instrument on Voices of Bach. The English Concert, the excellent English-based Baroque period orchestra, and Trinity Baroque, a very small but quite superb chorus, support Mayer's solos with graceful but heartfelt accompaniments, and Decca captures them in clean, warm, and open digital sound. 1 BWV 75~Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan Albrecht Mayer 1:41. 2 Concerto for Oboe d'Amore, Strings and Continuo (after Bach's BWV 54)~1. Allegro Albrecht Mayer 6:7. 3 Concerto for Oboe d'Amore, Strings and Continuo (after Bach's BWV 54)~2.
Johann Sebastian Bach & Albrecht Mayer & Trinity Baroque & The English Concert. COMPOSER: Johann Sebastian Bach. PERFORMER: Albrecht Mayer. ENSEMBLE: Trinity Baroque The English Concert.
In the case of Bach, Mayer has hit on the ingenious solution of including not just Bach's canonical Oboe Concerto, plus his concertos for oboe d'amore and English horn, but also eight arrangements of well-known chorales for chorus and oboe. This serves the dual tasks of keeping the program interesting for the listener and challenging for Mayer, and it works brilliantly.
Mayer is accompanied by the English Concert, one of the world’s greatest Baroque orchestras. His last CD of Bach transcriptions for oboe and orchestra immediately entered the German classical charts at number two. Although he made his name as an orchestral player, Albrecht Mayer's solo performances are brilliant and distinctive, thanks to the tone of his instrument and his handling of well-known tunes. A fantastic album of Baroque tunes, given a new lease of life for the modern oboe.
