On her 29th album, Emmylou Harris continues the evolution from innocent folkie to present day renaissance woman. Here, drum loops and middle eastern melodies nestle in comfortably next to warm guitar work and Harris' gently wavering voice.

This is the title track album of Red Dirt Girl. The album marked a significant departure for Harris, as eleven of the twelve tracks were written or co-written by her. She had previously been best known for covering other songwriters' work.

The American singer Emmylou Harris has released 26 studio albums (including four albums of collaborations with other artists), three live albums, 11 compilation albums, three video albums, and 70 singles. After releasing a debut folk album on the Jubilee label in 1969 and recording with Gram Parsons, Harris signed with Reprise Records in 1974. In 1975, Harris released her major-label debut album, Pieces of the Sky, on Reprise

Lyrics to "Red Dirt Girl" song by Emmylou Harris: Me and my best friend Lillian And her blue tick hound dog Gideon Sittin on the front porch cooling . .She grew up tall and she grew up thin Buried that old dog Gideon By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard Got in trouble with a boy from town Figured that she might as well settle down So she dug right in Across a red dirt line just a little.

Red Dirt Girl is an Emmylou Harris album from 2000, which reached No. 3 on the Billboard country album charts and won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 2001. The album was a significant departure for Harris, as eleven of the twelve tracks were written or co-written by her. She was best known for covering other songwriters' work. Prior to this album, only two of Harris' LPs had more than two of her own compositions (Gliding Bird in 1969, and The Ballad of Sally Rose in 1985). Her next album, Stumble into Grace, was also written by Harris
