This track is really three ’70s reggae classics in one: Max Romeo’s Chase the Devil, Prince Jazzbo’s Croaking Lizard, and Lee Perry’s mix of both with his own vocals. All this and more gets tossed in the pot in the nearly seven-minute-long Disco Devil. Disco doesn’t reference the flashy dance genre of the same name but rather the concept of the discomix, a 12 vinyl format that contains a vocal song seamlessly followed by a dub remix or a deejay version (meaning a rapped performance over the rhythm track). The ’70s yielded countless songs about falling in love, but few are as blissful as this. This is, essentially, the vocabulary of rhythm and blues, which Morrison, on Caravan ’s album Moondance, had finally, almost seamlessly absorbed into his own music, and of which Caravan is its most excited expression. Listen: Van Morrison: Caravan.

Only for completionists (0%). I rank this classic Dutch band among the finest prog bands of the 70's, perhaps as No. 1 of non-British artists. In their halcyon days both Thijs Van Leer (organ, flute, vocals) and Jan Akkerman (guitars) composed excellent, often classically influenced music, but within a few years most of that excellence was gradually lost and Van Leer disbanded the group in 1978.
Focus were The Netherlands’ leading 70s rock band. Formed in 1969, they won attention through early single ‘House Of The King’. The theme for four UK TV series(!), the unwary might have mistaken it for a Jethro Tull ditty thanks to the flute of Thijs Van Leer, though his group were very different. Their second album, 1971’s II, was Focus’ breakthrough, delivering an international hit in the fierce ‘Hocus Pocus’. The following year’s Moonmadness was another hit amid various line-up changes, and the group kept charting until 1984. Barclay James Harvest, Gentle Giant.
Sold as a package of six separate discs, each of which contain 11 or 12 tracks, this compilation actually does feature 70 recordings that were number one singles during the 1970s. The simple fact that it lives up to its title is more remarkable than you might think; there are albums out there with the phrase "number one hits" in their names that contain only a few actual chart-toppers. Justifying the title, though, is the best it does. Otherwise, it is a randomly sequenced collection of often stylistically disparate recordings, with no annotations
