The first single from LeAnn Rimes' 14th studio album, Spitfire, chronicles her 2009 film-set romance with her Northern Lights co-star, Eddie Cibrian, when both were already married. I carried the title around with me for about eight months, because I was so unsure of how to write it without offending anyone," Rimes told journalist Katie Couric of the song I call myself 'pathetic' in the song because that's exactly the way I felt. It was just a pathetic situation. She was talking about her stepkids and saying, 'I can't think of them as mine, only borrowed. Almost as if they're on loan from God or nature. That idea really struck me: you don't own people in your life, you're just borrowing them. It's a temporary arrangement. Another Spitfire track, "What Have I Done," was supposed to be the first official single but this song was released to radio first, due to an overwhelming fan demand.
Since LeAnn Rimes and Stevie Nicks both have the voices of angels, it only makes sense for them to record a duet together. The country superstar and Fleetwood Mac queen, respectively, re-recorded Rimes’ song Borrowed for her new Re-Imagined EP, and the result is a most-heavenly duet. Borrowed is the final of five tracks to be released from Re-Imagined, a collection of re-worked tunes from Rimes’ catalogue. The heartbreaking song is from Rimes’ 2013 album, Spitfire. Nicks herself plucked Borrowed from Rimes’ catalogue for the two to record together, she said in a statement: I first heard ‘Borrowed’ in 2013-LeAnn was singing it on The Tonight Show. I stopped in my tracks and sat down on the floor and started to cry. I understood what she was singing about. I understood that the pain was real and I understood that it had happened to me.
