In August 1953, Lillian Claiborne sold two masters to the Gem label: "Can't You See I Love You"/"My Heart Is Yours"; they were released as the "Rainbows. These are, most probably, Serenaders masters. If so, why were they called the Rainbows? I'm not sure. It could be because she learned that Hardy and Womble were now in a group called the Rainbows. She might have renamed the group before sending the masters to Gem (which, in turn, might have influenced Hardy and Womble to use the name for their new group). It might have been pure coincidence.

Donald James Randolph (March 24, 1936 – January 31, 2015), better known by the stage name Don Covay, was an American R&B, rock and roll and soul singer and songwriter most active from the 1950s to the 1970s. His most successful recordings include "Mercy, Mercy" (1964), "See-Saw" (1965), and "It's Better to Have (and Don't Need)" (1974). He also wrote "Pony Time", a US number 1 hit for Chubby Checker, and "Chain of Fools", a Grammy-winning song for Aretha Franklin

The early years of this influencial Soul star and songwriter, from Doo-Wop through Little Richard-styled power Rock'n'Roll (mostly recorded under pseudonym 'Pretty Boy') to Twist and Popcorn-Soul stuff of the early Sixties is included on the CD. Hear the original version of 'Pony Time' (written by Covay for Chubby Checker), and also his sweating version of Little Richard's 'Ooh! My Soul'! Hear the songs Covay made as Pretty Boy & The Lee Simms Orchestra, Don Covay & The Goodtimers, and with The Rainbows  . PRETTY BOY & The Lee Simms Orchestra.

She might have renamed the group before sending the masters to Gem (which, in turn, might have influenced Hardy and Womble to use the name for their new group). It might have been pure coincidence. It might have even been because they really were recorded by some other group called the Rainbows. At least one other old master by this group found its way to the Baron label in the mid-70s: "It's Terrific."
